Colin Van Geffen is an established and well-known artist and public speaker who lives and works in the New Forest. He is a local historian and aviation enthusiast. He researches and writes all of his presentations and presentation of the facts is his priority. Colin’s talk The Flying Boats of Southampton (Ships of the Sky) recalls the Golden Years of the commercial flying boat era, when Southampton and its Empire flying boats led the world. He is the first yachtsman to sail solo non-stop round the world in both directions and complete five circumnavigations The Rescue of Alex Thomson on the Velux 5 Oceans Race 2006/7 Alex Thomson ( Hugo Boss) and Mike Golding (Ecover) were two of the three entries – the other being one rather notable Sir Robin Knox Johnson ( Saga) in the V5O solo race around the world from Bilbao to Bilbao with just two stops in Fremantle and Norfolk USA. After a tough start in storm force conditions one by one each of the Brits were forced to stop and after restarting in Spain. Thompson and Golding went in hot pursuit of Bernard Stamm who had gained a healthy early race lead.
