2019 Cruising, Racing and Social Diary

Dear Member,  

2019 is fast approaching, and we look forward to being able to welcome you back to our very special Royal Yacht Club, which despite - or arguably because of - the decision this year to vacate the Ocean Village clubhouse, promises to offer a vibrant and interesting experience, whatever your areas of interest. Our popular Cruising and Racing programmes continue, unaffected by the change. However our Social programme has a variety and appeal beyond what was possible when we were committed to supporting a demanding asset; it is now possible for the committees and staff to focus their efforts on providing what members want - not on marketing to third party businesses. 

This page contains information about your renewal, our extensive Cruising, Racing and Social plans for the coming year, the benefits of membership including exciting new partnerships with other clubs and how to thank our staff for all their help in 2018.

As agreed in November’s AGM, Membership fees for all categories have been reduced by 25% (against 2018 rates) to reflect the reduced running costs of the club. By this time next year we expect to have a clearer indication of income, running costs and future commitments but this provides a starting point.

If you pay by Direct Debit, no action is required. In the interest of minimising administration costs, we would encourage any member who has not yet set up a Direct Debit to do so when renewing their membership this year.
A 2% refund will be credited to your bank account in January 2019 if you pay the full amount by 4th January.This may be by direct debit, bank transfer, cheque (to Accounts at our new address:Royal Southampton Yacht Club, Floating Bridge Road, Southampton SO14 3FL) or card (Call the office on 02380 223352).

It has been very heartening to have such a positive response from many members to the hard decisions that had to be made. Many have stepped up to assist - with the result that all Flag and Committee posts have been filled, with many new faces appearing, and individual members have, unsolicited, volunteered to initiate new social events. Now that your Committees are freed from their commercial focus they are able to respond more fully to members’ requests and suggestions, so please do keep these coming.

House Committee’s new social workgroup has worked hard to provide a full range of social options for those living or keeping their boats on both sides of Southampton Water, as well as those who are further afield. As the diary indicates there is a wide variety of events and activities proposed to be held at the newly refurbished Gins (due to reopen late March, works permitting) and in the Southampton area. By popular demand the Carvery Quiz is back, as from January! It will be neatly positioned between Gins and Southampton, at the Boathouse Restaurant in Hythe Marina. A Dining Club is being formed and our new Pub of the Month initiative will allow us to enjoy each others’ company for a modest cost, and perhaps be entertained, at the most interesting pubs and bars in Southampton. 
The Social programme is still evolving and a number of venues are yet to be confirmed. The Diary section of the Website will be kept updated as changes occur. Upcoming events will also continue to be notified via fortnightly Social e-bulletins and the full Diary will as usual be included as a pull-out centrefold in 'On The Water and Ashore' which will be published early next year. 


We are delighted to advise that the following new Member Benefits have been negotiated:

Majestic wines: Members will receive discount vouchers with their Membership renewal confirmations - £10 discount on your first purchase of over £40 and £25 discount on your first purchase of over £100 (in store or online)
Harbour Hotel, Ocean Village: Membership of the Spa and Fitness club at Corporate rates - this includes discounts for treatments and for dining.
Grand Harbour Hotel, West Quay: A special rate of £10 per day for use of their leisure facilities (Normally £15) - and also 25% off any treatment, Monday to Thursday.
Southampton Water Activities Centre: 20% off standard rate for recreational sessions or SUP (Paddleboard) hire - and 20% off standard rate of first Active Nation training course, with 10% corporate discount applied to members for any subsequent course.

New arrangements, going well beyond the existing ‘Reciprocity’ agreements, are being negotiated to give RSYC Members fuller access to certain other Royal Yacht Clubs. And we are also in discussions with Red Jet on discounted fares for members.

So watch out for further announcements!


This is the time of year when we show our appreciation of the Club Staff. Having sadly had to part with a number of wonderful hospitality staff this year we wanted to ensure we showed your appreciation, so we distributed the existing staff fund between them. We would therefore welcome your generosity in topping up this fund to ensure we can provide the usual gra
tuities to the remaining hospitality and office employees who have worked so hard this year.
